Tattoo Aftercare Information
Traditional Bandages
- Remove wrap within 1-3 hours.
- Wash tattoo with warm water and an unscented antibacterial soap. Lightly pat tattoo dry with a towel.
- Once dry, apply a light layer of ointment (like Aquaphor) to the tattoo. Carefully wipe off excess ointment with a paper towel. It should NOT feel sticky or tacky to the touch.
- Repeat steps #2 and #3, 3 times daily for 3 days.
- On the fourth day, replace the ointment with an unscented moisturizing lotion.
- Moisturize several times daily for 3 weeks.
Saniderm/DermShield/Tegaderm Bandage
For small tattoos:
1. Keep the film on for 2-4 days.
• Liquid (plasma & excess ink) may form inside the film. The is normal. Do NOT drain the liquid.
2. Remove the film on the fourth day. Use running water to help remove the film, if needed.
For large tattoos:
- Keep the film on for 24 hours.
- Remove the film after 24 hours, and replace it with a new piece of film given to you by your artist.
Keep this film on for 2-3 more days.
For ALL tattoos:
- After removal, wash the tattoo with warm water and an unscented soap. Lightly pat tattoo dry with a towel.
- Use an unscented moisturizing lotion as needed.
- Repeat steps #3 and #4 for 3 weeks.
General Care Info
- NEVER touch a healing tattoo with unwashed hands.
- DO NOT scratch, pick at, or shave over your tattoo while it's healing.
- AVOID workouts with excessive movement and sweating near the tattooed area.
- AVOID direct sunlight while your tattoo is healing. DO NOT apply sunscreen to a healing tattoo.
- AVOID pools, hot tubs, & the ocean while your tattoo is healing.
- DO NOT submerge your tattoo underwater for 3 weeks.
- Once it's healed, USE moisturizing lotion and sunscreen regularly to preserve your tattoo.
- Listen to your tattoo artist, NOT your friends!
